Lablab Beans!

Lablab Beans / അമര പയർ / അവര / Broad Beans / Lablab Purpureus

In many households in my neighborhood, grows an old, un-hybridized cultivar of lablab beans. It is quite a hardy climbing vine, resistant to most pests and diseases and produces a copious quantity of beans round the year with very little care. The beans are smaller than the commercially cultivated varieties and are nearly as bitter as bitter gourd. Nutritious Toran (stir-fry with grated coconut) is prepared and the local people enjoy it with rice. Perhaps our scientists could use this wild cultivar to create more pest-resistant types of the sweeter modern varieties.
