Time Flows On!

The rickety wooden bridge,
Spans the perennial mountain stream,
Come summer or monsoon,
Her cool sweet water flows on.

Starting from the virgin rain forest,
Under tall, dense, green canopies,
Where sunlight never kisses the ground,
Starts she, and ceaselessly goes on.

The bridge, the trees and the stream,
Witness in silent communion,
As dusk succeeds dawn,
And as life flows on.

As the moon and the stars.
Quietly give way to rising sun,
The village awakens – men and women,
Laborers, chickens, school children,
Hobbling old men, stray dogs,
Cows impatient to graze,
Farmers with loads of produce,
All cross the bridge, move on.

Soon the village brats are up,
Not yet started school,
Oh, what joy to pelt stones at mangoes,
To run at breakneck speed and brawl!

Now there is a commotion,
A wheezing little lady, quite, quite old,
Lying on an armchair,
Lashed to a couple of bamboo poles.

Four hefty young men,
Quickly take her across the bridge,
Into the waiting jeep,
To the hospital, she goes.

Scarce a day passes,
When they bring her back in a coffin,
The stream whispers, “Her time is done,
To her maker she goes!

Here was I when she was born,
Playing in my waters, she grew.
The damsel soon got married,
To a young man from yonder village.

Soon, they came and settled here,
Had children, grandchildren.
Then a great grandma was she,
Eldest in the village, now gone!”

The summer dries the grass,
Except around the stream,
Everyone finds solace,
In the grace that flows on.

Then the monsoon clouds come,
Lightning, thunder, rain,
The stream swells to a river,
While the bridge just holds on.

Aware in the infinite ocean of love,
Silently, they watch, moment to moment,
The ever-changing scenes of life,
As timeless time flows on!

Happy Vishu!

My precious friends,

Spring heralds the harvest festival of Vishu in God's Own Country, Kerala. To the Malayali, it means the start of a prosperous New Year, with blessings divine, and the gaining of the strength and the will to swim victoriously through the multifarious experiences of life. Wish you all a very happy Vishu!

Expect naught, what comes, blesses!

In a crack in the pavement,
With neither food, nor water,
Grows a being of love,
And of amazing beauty.

Neglected, uncared for,
Braving the occasional stomp,
Or a wayward kick,
Seeking certificates, none,
Lone and proud, stands she!

Peaceful, smiling, cheering,
Radiating joy and love to all,
Silently and sweetly, she laughs!

A pause to my walk, I ask,
'What be the secret of thy joy?'
She laughs, then whispers,
'Oh, I expect naught,
So what comes, blesses!'

The Coral Vine!

Antigonon of the buckwheat family (Polygonacae). This is of a little beauty, growing on the coast of the Arabian Sea at Thalassery, Kerala, India. Nourished by the salty sprays from the waves breaking on the rocks and constantly caressed by the sea breeze, the creeping vine, locally known as 'Kadalapoo', is the favourite haunt of bees (please zoom in on the flowers), a treasure house of nectar and pollen.

An invasive species native to Mexico, the bee bush, as it is sometimes called, has now a global presence, not just on the warm coastline, but in the cooler hills as well. Bee lovers and bee keepers, do take a closer look at this perennial plant which requires practically no care at all!

Bring Out the Gold!

Sweet starfruit lit up by the morning sun!

On and off,
Life shines her torch,
Of her fiery light,
Upon ‘We’!

Though we protest and whimper,
Though we struggle and wriggle,
That unrelenting torch,
Never lets us be!

And succeed it does,
In bringing out the gold,
Oh, kept so well hidden,
Deep within the strata of ‘We’!

Fortunate be ‘Thee’,
Shouldst though, but choose,
To bear the light,
And to know thyself as ‘He’!

The Tempest Passeth as a Breeze!

The Malayalis have a saying – ‘കൊടുങ്കാറ്റ്‌ പോലെ വന്നത് കുളിർക്കാറ്റ്  പോലെ പോകും'. It means that what (seems to) come as a hurricane will pass (you) as a cool breeze. For many of us, when the mind dwells on fears, or on anticipated problems, it works itself up to a frenzy. It makes mountains out of molehills, whips up apprehensions of terrible things that could happen, of plans which could go horribly wrong, and in short, worries itself sick. If one can stick to just taking things as they come, to live in the moment, as much as one can, life will turn out to be relatively tension free, and definitely much sweeter!
